Are you ready for the virtual laboratory VLabS 1.5?

The Virtual Laboratory for Semiconductor Technology (VLabS) is your opportunity to practice cleanroom experiments from the comfort of your living room – or wherever you are!

VLabS 1.5 offers you a complete lab course about the fabrication of a temperature sensor. The first step is to dress for cleanroom success – in the airlock!

After that, you can go through the seven modules of the course:

  1. Spin coating
  2. Alignment and ultraviolet exposure
  3. Development
  4. Metal coating
  5. Metal lift-off
  6. Screen printing
  7. Wire bonding

Sounds unfamiliar? That’s why each module starts with an interactive 3D gallery. Each gallery guides you stepwise from everyday experiences to the lab experiments.

  • Spin coating relies on a spinning motion, like a pizza baker who is spinning the pizza dough to make it wide and thin!
  • Alignment and UV exposure involve using joysticks, casting shadows, and controlling the dose of UV light – as seen on a sunny day at the beach!
  • Development is like revealing a hidden image, and we follow up with rinsing and drying – similar to how you clean a dog!
  • Metal coating will remind you of boiling water in a pot.
  • Metal lift-off looks a little bit like rocket lift-off!
  • Screen printing is used not only for technology, but also for art!
  • Wire bonding is similar to sewing!
